A practical place to explore pet names

PetNames brings structured name lists and a configurable generator into one place. You can browse by animal or style, filter the curated collection, try optional creative suggestions, and save a shortlist in your browser.

The aim is useful inspiration, not a claim that one name is objectively perfect. A good choice still depends on your pet, household, language, and how the name feels when you say it aloud.

What is in the collection

A repository audit dated 15 July 2026 counted 4,803 animal-name records, or pairings, across ten pet types. Those records contain 2,002 distinct names across all animals because a suitable name can appear in more than one animal list.

We describe those figures separately. The larger number is not a count of unique names. Our methodology page explains the distinction and how generated suggestions differ from the curated collection.

How to read meanings and guidance

Name meanings and origins are editorial aids unless a specific source is shown beside the claim. They may summarize common associations or a creative interpretation; they should not be treated as verified etymology simply because they appear in a list.

PetNames does not present pet-name suggestions as veterinary, training, legal, or cultural expertise. Where a page eventually carries a named reviewer or source, that information should be visible on the page.

Independence and themed collections

A name inspired by a film, character, language, place, or other property is included for naming inspiration. Inclusion does not imply sponsorship, endorsement, ownership, or affiliation with the people or organizations connected to that reference.

Cultural and property-inspired claims deserve extra care. If a page does not show a source, do not read its wording as proof of cultural authenticity or official status.
